Irish Castle Turret, Reverse Painting on Glass, circa 1890s
This rare reverse painting on glass, or verre eglomise , of an old Irish castle, better identified as a 15th century Irish keep or peel tower, is a charming example of an art style that had a brief resurgence during the Victorian period. This unusual technique requires that the artist paint the design on one side of the glass while it can be viewed from the other. Ruins of these old castles can be found throughout Ireland, and while many have been restored and given new life, this lovely scene captures a long ago moment that to any Irishman, represents the very magic that is Erin.
